The Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden University includes an osteoarchaeology research laboratory and invites applications from outstanding scholars for a one-year contractually limited position at the rank of: Assistant Professor in Osteoarchaeology/Biological Anthropology (38 hours per week)

The successful candidate will join the science-based bioarchaeology group. The successful candidate will be responsible for undergraduate and graduate level courses in Osteoarchaeology, Advanced Human Osteology, Paleopathology, Laboratory Methods in Human Osteology, and leading MSc Thesis Tutorial classes involving instruction in scientific writing, data presentation, statistical methods, and professional skills. The successful candidate will contribute to the supervision of theses within the BA and MSc programs. The candidate is also required to participate in administrative responsibilities, commensurate with experience and level of appointment. Requirements
The department is seeking candidates that demonstrate excellence in teaching and research and whose interests intersect both the natural and social sciences in understanding past human societies. More specifically, we seek candidates with the following:

PhD in (Physical) Anthropology or Archaeology;
Experience in teaching and research in osteoarchaeology;
Demonstrated commitment to the development of research in one of the sub-fields of bioarchaeology, such as human osteology, paleopathology, paleonutrition, paleodemography, dental anthropology, or quantitative methods;
Excellent command of English; fluency in Dutch is desirable.

We offer
The appointment is according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) for the duration of one year. The function is validated in the University Function Ordening system under the profile Universitair docent. The salary, depending on education and work experience, is between the gross minimum of € 3.227,- and gross maximum of € 4.418,- per month, based on full-time employment (salary scale: 11). Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. The position is available as of September 01 2013.

The Department of Anthropology at Purdue University seeks applicants for a one academic year Visiting Assistant Professor position in biological or bio-cultural anthropology beginning August 2013. A Ph.D. in Anthropology is required at the time of appointment. Teaching load is three undergraduate courses per semester, including Culture Food and Health, with additional courses to be determined. Teaching and research experience in one or more of the following areas are desirable: introduction to biological anthropology, global health, human biology, biological basis of human social behavior, human evolution, primate behavior and archaeology.

All geographic foci and subdisciplines of anthropology will be considered so long as the applicant's research complements the work of the Museum's current curators, can be tied to current collections and exhibitions, and will provide opportunities for the participation of the Museum's myriad citizen scientists.

Applications are invited for a full-time, benefitted position as Postdoctoral Scientist in GW’s Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology (CASHP), to contribute to morphological research on the development and life history of Virunga mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

The successful applicant will contribute to a field-based research program employing photogrammetry methods to investigate relationships between the physical ontogeny and life history of living mountain gorillas monitored by the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, and will also take advantage of a recently-established collection of well documented mountain gorilla skeletal remains in Rwanda to generate new research.

The project will require spending the majority of the year based at the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, and will involve close collaboration with the CASHP-based Project Director and with researchers, field assistants and other staff of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International’s Karisoke Research Center, Rwanda Development Board’s Department of Tourism and Conservation (national parks authority), and the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project. Activities will include field observational studies and behavioral data collection from wild gorillas, digital photogrammetry to measure physical traits of wild gorillas, collection of skeletal data, statistical analysis of results, and writing research articles. There may also be opportunities to contribute to ongoing laboratory-based research on the hard tissue biology of mountain gorillas, and field efforts based at other long-term primate study sites, depending on interests.

The position is currently supported for a period of two years. Desired start date is July-August, 2013. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in biological anthropology, zoology, primatology or a related discipline before the start date. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with methods employed in field primatology and/or morphology based research, and a demonstrated ability to conduct and publish their research. Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
